How is coaching different from consulting?

Coaches support their client in finding their own solution to a challenge in contrast with consulting where the consultant makes recommendations.  The greatest learning, empowerment and commitment to action comes individuals find the optimum solution based on their real life experiences.  Coaches support this learning process by providing just-in-time training, asking powerful questions, sharing personal experiences and making creative suggestions.

How is coaching different from counseling?

Coaches focus is on what steps need to be taken to reach high performance goals.  Unlike therapy, coaching is typically not concerned with understanding the past, it is forward looking. Coaches will refer clients to therapy to address emotional issues.

How is coaching different from training?

Coaching may include some training, however its focus is to provide leadership skills training, as it is required to achieve specific goals.  This is called just-in-time training and is a very efficient way of learning. 


How do I know if coaching is right for me?

Ideal coaching clients are individuals or teams that are committed to professional and personal development and are motivated to make changes in their lives to reach high performance goals.


How do I get started?

To find someone that you believe you can work with you begin by finding and interviewing one or more potential coaches.  Your local chapter of the International Coaching Federation should be able to help you with a list of coaches in your area who have experience in working in your industry.

Leading Insight offers a free introductory session to support individuals in making the right choice.


How long and how often do I work with my coach?

 Coaching sessions are  structured to maximize the value of the time and the learning of the client.   Coaching is usually done on the  telephone, with the occasional personal meeting.  The length and frequency of meetings will vary according to the issues being addressed.   A customized coaching program is usually developed in partnership with the client at the first session. Some clients see satisfying results from 2-3 sessions.   


How much does coaching cost?

Coaches usually bill on a monthly basis, and fees for individual coaching range from $350 to $3000/month depending on the nature of the work and the experience of the coach. 

Is the coaching profession subject to any ethics or standards?

Currently there are virtually no requirements by any state or country that require a coach to be licensed or approved.
