What is coaching?

Coaching is a action oriented, thought-provoking process that helps clients maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaches work with clients in many areas, including business, career, finances, health, and relationships. As a result of coaching, clients set better goals, take more action, make better decisions, and more fully use their natural strengths.

How is coaching different from consulting, training or therapy?

Consulting: Coaching is a process that supports client in finding their own solution to a challenge in contrast with consulting where the consultant prescribes recommendations for improvement and may implements solutions. The greatest learning, empowerment and commitment to action comes when individuals find the optimum solution based on their real life experiences. Coaches support this process by asking powerful questions, sharing personal experiences and building accountability. Our coaching programs may include consulting if the client can benefit from the specific expertise and experience of the coach.
Training: Training is a structured process designed to help clients develop skills, transfer knowledge or achieve specific learning objectives. Through the coaching process clients will learn and develop skills, and at times the coach may provide “just-in-time” training as an efficient way of learning. The focus of coaching is to pull expertise and insight from the client to enhance competence and personal development rather then push a specific answer, theory or approach.
Therapy: Coaching, at times, can be therapeutic, and help clients in all aspects of their lives. However coaching is not therapy. The emphasis of coaching is on action, accountability and forward progress, moving from good to great. Therapy is focused on understanding psychological root cause, healing from pain, dysfunction and resolving issues from their past.

Companies use coaches to support them in dealing effectively with a broad range of business challenges using a variety of techniques designed to bring awareness, understanding, creativity, and commitment to thoughtful action. How can I determine if coaching is right for me?

Coaching is a partnership that so we have found that the best way to choosing your coach can feel like a daunting task but we’ve found that the best way to decide if a coach is right for you is to simply have a conversation with him or her. The most important factor is that you feel comfortable with your prospective coach. Since coaching is a partnership, also ask yourself if you find it valuable to collaborate, to have another viewpoint and to be asked to consider new perspectives. Also, ask yourself if you are ready to devote the time and the energy to making real changes in your work or life. If the answer to these questions is yes, then coaching may be a beneficial way for you to grow and develop.

How often and for how long will I work with my coach?

Coaching sessions are structured to maximize the value of the time and the learning of the client. Coaching is usually done on the telephone, with the occasional personal meeting. The length and frequency of meetings varies depending on your personal needs and preferences. We highly recommend an initial commitment of three to six months. This provides ample time for the coaching process to be most effective. The results of the coaching experience will last a lifetime.

How do I get started?

To find someone that you believe you can work with you begin by finding and interviewing one or more potential coaches. Leading Insight offers a free introductory session to support individuals in making the right choice.

How much does coaching cost?

Fees for executive coaching range from $350 to $5000/month depending on the work and the experience of the coach.

What must I do to ensure success with my coaching experience?

Be honest, both with your coach and with yourself. The better and more openly you can communicate, the more successful the process will be. Be open to doing things differently than you have before and be willing to be gently stretched outside of your comfort zone. If you commit to the coaching process, work hard and complete your assignments, you will see progress unfold.
